Amarillo, TX – Behind career-best performances from multiple players, the Western Texas College Lady Westerners battled through every match at the Amarillo College Tournament, snapping a 10-match losing streak and a seven-set skid with a five-set victory over Otero College on Saturday.
Savhanna Thompson (16 kills vs. Trinidad, 15 digs vs. Otero), Sydney Roberts (career-high 26 assists vs. Trinidad, 500th career assist), Anayah Sinclair (career-high 14 kills vs. Trinidad), and Zenaida Murillo (career-high 17 digs vs. Trinidad) .
The Lady Westerners opened play on Friday against Trinidad State, posting a season-high .208 team hitting percentage in the match.
Thompson powered the offense with a season-best 16 kills, Sinclair added a career-high 14 kills, and Cam chipped in 10 kills at a .381. Roberts directed the offense with a career-high 26 assists and three service aces, while Murillo anchored the defense with a career-best 17 digs.
Later that day, the Lady Westerners fell in straight sets to nationally-ranked Blinn despite eight kills from Thompson and five from Sinclair.
Saturday brought the breakthrough WTC had been searching for. In a back-and-forth battle with Otero College, the Lady Westerners secured a 3-2 win (23-25, 25-8, 25-23, 23-25, 15-11). Thompson recorded 15 digs to go along with seven kills and three solo blocks, while Sinclair led the attack with 12 kills. Roberts, who crossed the 500-assist milestone for her career during the weekend, added 18 more assists and six service aces. Maja Ludyga (.545 hitting, 7 kills, 5 blocks) and Aubrie Frazier (7 kills, .286).
WTC closed the tournament against Butler Community College (KS), dropping a 3-0 decision. Frazier led the team with four kills, while Thompson and Sinclair combined for six more.
The Lady Westerners now shift their focus to conference play, opening at home against Midland College on Wednesday, September 17, at 6:00 p.m. inside WTC Gymnasium in Snyder, Texas.
