Tishomingo, Okla. – Men's soccer team opened its 2025 season, defeating nationally ranked No. 12 Murray State College 4-1 on the road. The victory marked the Westerners' first win in Tishomingo since September 19, 2015, when they earned a 5-1 result.
After a scoreless first half, the Westerners broke through in the 51st minute when Carl Emil Pedersen, assisted by Philipp Federer, put WTC on the board. Just two minutes later, Myles Taylor doubled the lead with a goal set up again by Federer.
Murray State cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 67th minute, but the Westerners responded with two late goals to seal the upset. Jodan Reed, assisted by Johnny Cuellar, extended the lead in the 78th minute before Jaxson Whitecapped the scoring in the 86th minute on a feed from Renson Sayers.
Goalkeeper Brian Garcia was special in his collegiate debut, recording seven saves and earning his first career win.
WTC finished the match with 14 shots, including eight on goal.
With the win, Western Texas starts the season 1-0 and will look to carry their momentum into their next match on Thursday, August 22, when they travel to Paris, Texas, to face Paris Junior College at 1:00 p.m.
