Bio

Matt Hardy is set to begin his fifth season as the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Western Texas College, continuing a tenure marked by success both on and off the court.

Since taking the reins, Coach Hardy has elevated the Westerners into a competitive and respected program within the NJCAA. Under his leadership, WTC has produced three NJCAA Academic All-Americans, one All-Region V honoree, and seven All-WJCAC selections. Perhaps most notably, 21 of his players have gone on to compete at NCAA four-year institutions—a testament to his commitment to player development and progression.

On the court, the Westerners have recorded signature victories over eight NJCAA Top 25 teams, including monumental wins against the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked programs in the country. Defense has been the cornerstone of Hardy’s coaching philosophy, with the 2024–2025 squad finishing 18th nationally in team defense. Offensively, his teams have also flourished; the 2021–2022 team ranked 12th in the NJCAA in three-point shooting percentage, connecting at an impressive 37.7% clip.

Coach Hardy reached a milestone on February 6, 2025, when he earned his 50th career win at WTC. In the classroom, his teams have been equally impressive, boasting a 97% graduation rate among sophomores during his tenure.

Before being named head coach, Hardy served as WTC's assistant men's basketball coach during the 2019–2020 season. That year, the Westerners posted a 23–11 record and reached the Region V Tournament semifinals. The 23 victories tied for the program’s highest win total since 1984. The team achieved national recognition, earning a Top 25 ranking for five consecutive weeks and peaking at No. 11. In the postseason, they upset the No. 3 ranked team in the country to advance. That season also saw three players earn WJCAC All-Conference honors, four win WJCAC Player of the Week accolades, and 11 student-athletes commit to four-year universities.

Prior to his time at WTC, Hardy coached at D’Iberville High School in Biloxi, Mississippi, under former University of Mississippi women’s basketball head coach Renee Ladner. He led the Warriors to a 16–9 record and a berth in the MHSAA 6A State Tournament.

From 2013 to 2018, Hardy was an assistant coach at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (NJCAA Division I). During his five-year stint, the Bulldogs compiled an 87–41 record and made the MACJC playoffs every season—extending a conference-record streak to 21 consecutive appearances. Hardy helped guide the team to three MACJC Final Four appearances and one Region 23 Final Four. The program produced 28 four-year college signees and eight NJCAA All-Region 23 selections during his tenure. In 2017, player Davion Cole-Johnson earned NJCAA National Player of the Week honors. The Bulldogs reached No. 17 in the national rankings during the 2015–2016 season. Academically, the program excelled with a 97% graduation rate under Hardy’s watch.

Before entering the coaching profession, Hardy served in the U.S. Air Force from May 2005 to June 2013, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. As a Network Infrastructure Supervisor, he was stationed in Missouri, Guam, Italy, Mississippi, and South Korea—where he was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for his service.

A native of West Plains, Missouri, Hardy graduated from West Plains High School in 2005. He holds a Master of Education in Athletic Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with a minor in Secondary Education, both from William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Coach Hardy currently resides in Snyder, Texas, with his wife, Jillian, and their two children, Scarlett and Jett.
