Plainview, TX – The Western Texas College baseball team (12-32, 9-17) dropped a two-game series to Amarillo College on Friday afternoon in a pair of high-scoring contests. The teams combined for 66 total runs, with the Westerners falling 14-13 and 20-19.
Game One
Western Texas College suffered a heartbreaking 14-13 loss on the final play of the game. Tied at 13 in the bottom of the seventh, Amarillo delivered a walk-off single to secure the win.
The Westerners struck first in the second inning as Franco Marquez singled in a run and Caven Fuentes added a two-run double. Amarillo answered with four runs in the bottom half to take the lead.
Western regained control in the third inning when Garrett Rester doubled in two runs and Luke Trager followed with an RBI single to make it 6-4. Amarillo responded again, taking an 8-6 lead after three innings.
In the fifth, the Westerners surged ahead with five runs on four hits. The key hit came from Sebastian Llamozas, who launched a two-run home run to give Western a 12-8 advantage.
Amarillo tied the game in the sixth, capitalizing on a hit and a Western error. In the seventh, Marcelo Torres tied the game at 13 with a solo home run before Amarillo walked it off in the bottom half.
Jaden Ornales took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) over 1.2 innings.
Western tallied 15 hits in the game. Fuentes and Torres each collected four hits, while Fuentes drove in three runs and went 4-for-5. Rester and Trager also recorded multiple hits.
Game Two
Game two turned into an offensive shootout, with Amarillo edging Western 20-19.
Berndt House led the Westerners with two home runs and three RBIs, homering in both the fifth and eighth innings.
Western jumped out early when Llamozas hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Amarillo responded immediately with five runs in the bottom half and added another run in the second to extend the lead.
The Westerners battled back, tying the game at six in the fourth on a home run by Marquez. Amarillo regained control in the fourth with a three-run triple and extended the lead to 10-6.
Western answered again in the fifth, scoring five runs to take an 11-10 lead, highlighted by another Llamozas home run. However, Amarillo erupted for seven runs in the sixth to go back in front 17-12.
The Westerners continued to fight, as Torres blasted a grand slam in the seventh to pull the team within one run. In the eighth, Harris tripled in a run and House followed with a two-run homer to make it 20-19, but Western could not complete the comeback.
Regan Chomel started on the mound, allowing 10 runs on 12 hits over 3.1 innings.
Western collected 18 hits in the game. House, Marquez, and Llamozas each hit multiple home runs, while Torres and Marquez drove in four runs apiece. Fuentes, Stewart, Trager, and Llamozas all had multiple hits. The Westerners also turned one double play.
